Eṣfahān school was the last great school of Persian miniature paintings meant to adorn hand-written volumes. The birth of the printing press in the West severely diminished the use of this art form. Still, miniatures continued to be created in Persia and India during the nineteenth century. Almost without exception, these paintings were created by unknown artists. Signing a work of art was unnecessary: in fact, anonymity was preferred for the patron or viewer to judge the art on its own merits.
