Karoly Forgo was well known for creating brilliantly colorful still life's and landscapes, but his life was not always bright.
Known as Charlie, Forgo was born in Gyon, Hungary. He began painting as a young boy, and his talent almost immediately caught the attention of professional artists. Because his parents wanted him to become a forester, Forgo enrolled in a university before being drafted into the Hungarian army.
He was later captured by the Russian army and sent to Siberia, where, because of his artistic talent, landed a job painting Russian war posters.
In 1956, Forgo, his wife and two young sons, escaped from Hungary by riding a motorcycle to the Austrian border and then working their way north to Germany where they boarded a U.S. Army cargo ship with other refugees bound for the United States.
In the 1970s, he moved to Florida and joined a professional artist touring association, where he displayed his work around the country.
